Gum reshaping is a simple cosmetic procedure that eliminates excess gum tissue. It reshapes the gum line and makes the gums look symmetrical. It also makes the teeth look longer. Gum reshaping is usually performed along with cosmetic dental procedures such as teeth whitening and porcelain veneers.
Gum Reshaping
When patients need their gums reshaped, there are two primary ways to do so. The first is called crown lengthening, and it addresses cosmetic concerns with the gums above the teeth. The second method is called a “gum lift” and is commonly used when patients have gum disease or receding gums that expose the roots of the teeth. A gum lift reshapes the gums in order to cover more of the tooth structure below the gum line.
Both the crown lengthening procedure and the gum lift are performed using soft tissue lasers, which seal blood vessels to minimize bleeding and tissue trauma. Once the treatment is complete, patients may need stitches in some spots for additional support while they heal. But most patients do not need any sutures at all.
Recovery is fairly straightforward and can be helped along with over-the-counter pain medications. Patients should avoid eating hard foods for a few weeks as the gums will need time to heal completely. Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day is also very important to keep oral health on track following treatment.
Why Would I Need Gum Reshaping?
If you have uneven or excessive gum tissue, you may be a candidate for gum reshaping. This treatment can create more symmetrical gums and improve your smile. It can also help your teeth look longer and more balanced. Some patients may also opt for gum contouring to address issues like gummy smiles.
How Is A Gum Reshaping Procedure Performed?
Dr. Roshan uses special tools and lasers to carefully reshape the gums and teeth. The gums will first be numbed with a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Dr. Roshan will then use a tool called a diode laser to remove excess gum tissue. Dr. Roshan will also use a laser to reshape the teeth by sculpting their surfaces. Once the desired results have been achieved, Dr. Roshan will apply a special gel to the gums to protect the sensitive tissues. You will be able to walk out of the office shortly after the procedure is complete!
What Is The Recovery Time After Gum Reshaping?
Recovery from gum reshaping is a fairly straightforward process, and patients can usually return to normal life the same day they receive treatment. A local anesthetic is used so there will be no pain during the procedure. Most patients feel some discomfort for a day or two after treatment, but the side effects are minimal and can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication. While you should not smoke for at least three days after the procedure, you can resume your normal diet immediately. The teeth will be sensitive after the anesthetic wears off, so you should stick to a soft food diet for several days.
